Verse 1: + A
centurion was a Roman commander of about 80 men.
Verse 3: Other
translations read, “at about 3 in the afternoon.”
Peter’s Vision
Verse 9: at about
12 in the afternoon
Verse 14: Peter
was Jewish, and Jews had very specific laws about which types of animals they
could eat. # 1: These laws were given from God during ancient times. Here is a
list of the laws about which foods could be eaten:
Verse 15: The
meaning of this vision will be explained in the rest of the chapter.
Summoned to Caesarea
Verse 19: The
“Spirit” is the Holy Spirit, or God himself.
Peter Meets Cornelius
Verse 26: Peter
does not want Cornelius to bow before him, since Peter is not an angel or God.
Verse 28: Peter
explains the vision here. He understood that God was telling him that no man,
or the food offered to him by any man, could make Peter unclean. Before this
vision, Peter had focused his ministry toward other Jews rather than sharing
the Gospel with non-Jews. Jesus also started his ministry by focusing on the
Jews, his own people and culture, before he reached out to non-Jews. However,
it is important to note that #2: “’God is not one to show partiality
[prejudice], but in every ethnic group, the man who fears Him and acts
righteously is welcome to Him.’”
