Chapter 3
Note 1: This Bible study is
being created specifically for a friend of mine. It is not meant as an
exhaustive study of the book of Acts. Please do your own research, using the
commentary links as a starting point, for a better understanding of the book of
Acts and other books of the Bible. Thank you for your dedication to studying
the word of God!

citations are from NKJV (New King James Version) unless otherwise stated.

Bible study is heavily based on Dr. Nunnally’s work. I have not yet discovered
if he has published his book, but I will post a link for his work if I find out
that he has published it. Feel free to comment on this blog if you discover his
published book (if it’s published) before I do!

A Lame Man Healed
Verse 1: “ninth
hour” was 3 in the afternoon
Verse 2: “lame”
means that he did not have the use of his legs. He may have been paralyzed from
the
waist
down, or perhaps had rickets or some other infirmity.
- “ask
alms” means to beg for money
Verse 14: “asked
for a murderer” Barabbas was a criminal who was chosen to be released to the
public instead
of Jesus. Barabbas went free while Jesus was crucified.

Matthew 27:17 “Therefore when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them,
‘whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or
Jesus who is called Christ?”’
Verse 16: “And
His name” By the name of Jesus this man was healed, not by the names of Peter
or John. Jesus
gives the power to be healed and saved.

“soundness” in this context means healthiness since the man received the use of
his legs
through
healing
Verse 17: “you
did it in ignorance” means that he does not blame the people for crucifying
Jesus
because
they did it without knowing that they were in fact killing the Son of God
Verse 18: There
are many other books of the Bible in which prophecies are made concerning
Jesus, the Son of
God (read the books of Pslams,
Isaiah,
Micah,
the books of the Old Testament,
and the books of the prophets).
Verse 19: “and be
converted” means the people should turn their hearts to Jesus, accepting him as
their Savior
Verse 20: “That
He may send Jesus Christ” Peter, Paul, and modern church leaders support the
idea that Jesus
Christ will not return until the message of Jesus (his death and resurrection,
leading to our
salvation- the forgiveness of our sins and
spiritual freedom) has been preached to every non- Christian
(Gentiles).

Other disciples, such as Paul, support this statement in other books of the Bible.
Here is one example:
Romans 11:25 “ For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise
in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the
Gentiles has come in.” – (“until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in” refers to the idea that
the non-Christians (Gentiles) who hear about Jesus will turn their hearts to him and be
saved. It may be that Jesus will not return to earth again until every non-Christian has at least been
told about the message of Jesus (his death and resurrection, leading
to our salvation- the forgiveness of our sins and spiritual freedom).
Verse 21:
“restoration of all things” refers to the end of the world, when Jesus will come
back and bring all of
those who follow him into heaven, eternal rest and enjoyment of His creation (research the
words “heaven” and “restoration” in the
Bible).
Verse 25: a “covenant”
is a promise
Verse 26: The
prophecy beginning with “through your offspring” can be found in Genesis
22:18.
- “First
to you” means that Jesus shared his ministry with the Jews first, then to other people groups
afterwards. Jesus was a Jew, so this is logical.
